Have found a great series of books from Scripture union for children aged 6-8. They are called the rollercoaster series and they have fiction rollercoasters and bible rollercoasters.
We've read one story called an alien at Easter about a space alien called noughty (his real name is 9876543210000) and the kids love it, its all the little details in it that are really appealing to kids. They made great bedtime reading and we've been doing a couple of chapters a night. Plus they are designed so a child of 6-8 should be able to read the story on their own if they wanted.
You can get them from scripture union, premier,, Wesley Owen or any good Christian bookshop, but they are great fun, we were all laughing at the funny story.

Glad the kids are enjoying them! I think I copy edited all three Alien books. They were great fun to work on.
Have you seen the Zack Black books, too? They're also designed for kids who are just ready to read on their own, and they have some brilliant illustrations.
